Paul V. Verrecchia

Paul V. Verrecchia has more than 40 years law enforcement experience, with over 17 years experience in campus law enforcement/public safety. Paul retired as Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs and Chief of Police at the College of Charleston (Charleston, SC) where he oversaw the development of the institution’s first Emergency Preparedness and Management Plan. Prior to his tenure at the College of Charleston, he was the Chief of Police/Director of Public Safety at Brown University and the chief architect of the plan for arming Brown’s campus police officers. Paul was also a Margolis Healy Associate from the firm’s inception in 2008 and Director of Organizational Assessment Services for nearly two years.

Paul was also a member of the Providence (RI) Police Department for 22 years, rising to the rank of major. As a major, he held positions as Director of the Patrol and Traffic Services Division and Director of the Administrative-Staff Division. During his career with the Providence Police, Paul was assigned to the organized crime intelligence unit, the narcotics unit, and the Neighborhood Services Bureau, which was responsible for the investigation of bias-related crimes and community relations. While with Neighborhood Services, he also implemented interpreter programs for the city’s Southeast Asian community.  

Paul is a Past President of the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators (IACLEA). He served as a member of its Board of Directors, Accreditation Commission and Government Relations Committee. He also chaired several other committees and task forces for IACLEA.

Under Chief Verrecchia’s leadership, the College of Charleston's campus police received accreditation from both the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) and IACLEA. Brown University's campus police received initial accreditation and two reaccreditations from CALEA during his tenure as chief of police. Paul has been a team leader and assessor for CALEA since 1998, and was a member of the committee that developed the standards for CALEA’s Campus Security Accreditation Program and the accreditation standards specific to campus law enforcement (Chapter 91 of the CALEA Standards Manual of the Law Enforcement Agency Accreditation Program). Former Rhode Island Governor Lincoln C. Almond, appointed Paul as the Chairperson of the Governor’s Accreditation Commission and as a commissioner for the Rhode Island Ethics Commission.

Paul holds a Master of Public Administration, with a concentration in labor relations, from the University of Rhode Island and two Bachelor’s degrees from Roger Williams University (Bristol, RI). He was an adjunct instructor for the Community College of Rhode Island for approximately 12 years in both the criminal justice and sociology programs. Paul was also an adjunct instructor for the College of Charleston Department of Anthropology and Sociology’s Crime, Law and Society program.
