Secure Community Network: Special Briefing on School Security Webinar
In light of the mass shooting attack at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown CT, Secure Community Network is coordinating and hosting a national school safety and security webinar with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security with a special webinar presentation by Margolis Healy & Associates.
The webinar presentation by Margolis Healy will review and discuss lessons learned from past events, best practices and cost effective security recommendations that schools and other organizations should consider as part of their preparedness, crisis management and response planning.
The most recent incident in Newtown reminds us that schools continue to remain vulnerable targets for attack. While not every emergency and act of violence is 100% preventable, preparedness planning, training, testing and exercising our security plans can prevent and deter many situations and mitigate and lessen the impact of unavoidable events.
We encourage you to participate in this timely and important call and take the time to review and refresh your crisis response plan.
Participants can choose to access (1) both the webinar and audio conference or (2) just the audio conference if they are not in front of a computer: However, the audio portion will include reference to slides on the webinar.

Session: Under Siege: Guns on Campus
In the wake of the recent events in Connecticut, renewed focus has been placed on promoting legislation aimed at reducing gun violence. In addition, 18 states, supported by a well-organized national campaign, introduced legislation in 2011 to override institutional policies regarding guns on campus. Sixteen states followed suit in 2012. Colorado, Mississippi, Oregon, Utah, and Wisconsin have adopted laws requiring public colleges and universities to allow the carrying of concealed weapons on campus. This session will explore myriad questions associated with this topic, ranging from how to best ensure the safety of students and faculty on campuses already operating under concealed carry laws, to ways in which campuses and their national associations can be more effective partners in both stemming the tide of unwanted legislation and promoting legislation upon which campus leaders agree.
